COULD STEM CELLS REVERSE AGING?When do you start feeling old? Data shows it's around 37 or 38 (The Today Show)
Aging is a complex process in which cells in our bodies progressively deteriorate over time and eventually stop functioning. As we age, fewer and fewer cells are replaced, slowly wearing out our bodies. This means that over time, direct damage, accumulation of cellular waste, errors, and imperfect repairs accumulates. These processes result in the familiar signs of aging and ultimately to the development of age-related diseases we all know and fear.
Aging cells further contribute to disease. If aging in cells can be prevented, slowed down, or even reversed, many diseases could be controlled or cured. Stem cell research and related regenerative medicine therapies are being looked at for providing solutions to many of life’s problems.
We know that the human body has remarkable ability to heal itself. With a little help from stem cells, it can go from remarkable to unbelievable. And, it's not just about healing injuries, reversing aging is all about healing and recovering from stress.
Aging is that sinking feeling when you feel every joint in your body, the music seems too loud, getting out of bed in the morning takes a little more effort, and the world appears to be full of young people. But the fact is that most people feel younger or older than the age they really are – and this 'subjective age' has a big effect on their physical and mental health.
Various studies have even shown that your subjective age also can predict various important health outcomes, including your risk of death. In some very real ways, you really are ‘only as old as you feel’.
So what can we do to reverse aging or perhaps feel younger than what our birth certicate says? There is more to it than just a simple drug or an infusion! It is a process consisting of addressing mutiple factors and the underlying issues causing aging both on the cellular level, as well as on the body as a whole.

So Let’s Ask a Basic Question: What is Aging, Exactly?
As we age, we slowly begin to experience all these wonderful things: wacky hormonal imbalance, mood swings, hair loss and thinning, deterioration of hearing, flexibility, height, muscle and bone density, slowing of metabolism, reaction times, memory loss, smell, and vision; failure of organs like the kidneys, cardiovascular system, the nervous system, and the immune system; and an overall increase in the inflammation, etc. etc., etc. These are just a few things that happens to us as we age. But, can we do something about it? The answer is may be!
Stem cells and Anti Aging Treatments
Regenerative medicine and stem cells hold the most promise in developing new treatments to slow down the aging process or even reverse aging. New research and clinical trials are currently underway to give us an answer. The FDA has not issued a blanket approval for stem cell therapy for anti aging, but is openly encouraging research and clinical trials to prove safety and effecacy of cell-based therapy. Only reputable treatment centers and physicians trained in the latest stem cell treatment protocols, in full compliance with the FDA guidelines are able to perform treatments as part of a registered clinical trial. The FDA is actually very clear in proposing rectrictions on the specific protocols being used to collection and processing of stem cells from patients and its’ deployment.
In the past few years, stem cells have gained much acceptance and have quickly become a go-to method for potentially curing a number of diseases. Research and clinical trials thus far have shown breakthroughs in what and how stem cells can treat peoples with amny chronic conditions. Although the only proven safe and effective method for stem cell therapy is a bone marrow transplant, there is promise in other methods as well. Here, we’ll explain how stem cells help with inflammation.
Chronic Inflammation is at the Root of Many Diseases
Take a moment to think about some inflammatory conditions you are familiar with. Maybe you thought of asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, or even seasonal allergies. Now, think about the symptoms that come along with those conditions. It’s usually swelling, pain, redness, and poor mobility. All of those symptoms occur as a response to irritants in the body. But sometimes our body reacts to its’ own tissues as foreign causing much of the same sysmptoms. This is when inflammation becomes a real problem.
Inflammation is generally considered a bad thing, but it’s generally not meant to be. Inflammation is a defensive mechanism our body uses to restore balance following injury, insult, or infection. In other words, it’s our defense mechanism. However, inflammation can also cause much harm. In order to protect us, it can also bring about detrimental consequences.
The overall goal with treating inflammation is to correct the underlying problem so it doesn’t continue to harm the body. As physicians we advise patients to refrain from activities that cause inflammation or use popular pain medications and anti-inflammatory drugs. Although these are helpful, they don’t actually fix the source of the problem; it just reduces the symptoms.
Current research has discovered an important link between stem cells and reducing inflammation, especially at the source. This may be far more beneficial than just treating the symptoms. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) appear to be more important in therapeutics to regulate the immune response in settings such as tissue injury, and autoimmunity. For example, MSCs have been used therapeutically in clinical trials and subsequently in practice to treat graft-versus-host disease following bone marrow transplantation. Reports of successful immune modulation suggest efficacy in a wide range of autoimmune conditions, such as demyelinating neurological disease (multiple sclerosis), systemic lupus erythematosus, and Crohn's disease, among others.
Mesenchymal stem cells are further being studied as a way to resolve many inflammatory conditions. Several studies have shown MSCs to possess highly immunosuppressive functions, such as inhibiting the differentiation of white blood cell precursors and suppressing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and other substances. Adipose derived Mesenchymal stem cells, as processed by Dr. Tehrani at our Beverly Hills Clinic, may have the capacity to differentiate into a variety of tissue types with the potential to provide healing and turn down inflammation. They can be used to clinically replace or repair damaged tissue. Individuals suffering from inflammatory conditions can certainly benefit from this capability. Mesenchymal stem cells also produce a number of growth factors and cytokines. These growth factors may promote healthy cells to grew and repair some of the damage caused by chronic injury.
What is Regenerative Medicine?
Regenerative medicine is an exciting new area of medicine which aims to repair and replace tissues damaged by disease, trauma, or congenital conditions. This field holds the promise of regenerating damaged tissues and organs in the body by stimulating the body’s own natural healing processes to heal itself. Regenerative medicine isn't new — we have used our own cells and growth factors to regenerate tissues and organs for decades. Today, new advances in molecular and cell biology, immunology, and other fields have unlocked opportunities to develop new treatment modalities. The practice of Regenerative Medicine today involves using stem cells and cell-based therapies to rejuvenate and regenerate damaged tissues.
Stem Cells, PRP and Regenerative Medicine
Today, regenerative medicine, stem cell, cell-based technologies, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) are widely used in many treatment protocols in plastic surgery, aesthetics, orthopedics, sports injuries, and certain chronic diseases. Regenerative products are rich in natural growth factors and substances with great healing potential that are known to trigger natural regeneration and healing in many tissues. Multiple investigations have shown a combination of cell-based products to be a safe and extremely cost effective treatment option for many chronic conditions.
Dr. Kevin Tehrani is one of only a handful of physicians trained in the most advanced stem cell extraction and isolation techniques available in the United States. He is therefore able to offer this modern and more superior technique in conjunction with other advanced cell-based treatment modalities to achieve noticeable improvements in his patients. Looking at orthopedic applications of stem cells, as an example, patients typically see noticeable results within the first few weeks of treatment, with maximum results within six months to one year. In most cases Dr Tehrani uses all natural cells and growth factors from the patient without any foreign or donated tissues and cells.
Stem Cell Anti-aging & General Wellness
Imagine if you could go to your doctor and he or she was able to reverse age related changes and take you back to a more youthful state. While far too early to know if the true potential of regenerative medicine will ever be a reality, recent research on stem cells have opened up the possibility.
The fact is that the human body has remarkable ability for self-healing. With a little help from stem cells, it can go from remarkable to unbelievable. And, it’s not just about healing injuries – reversing aging is all about healing and recovering from stress.
The Stem Cell Balance Therapy
Our bodies are in a constant and continual state of repair and renewal ... in a state of Balance. The Balance is a good thing! It keeps us young and healthy. A good indicator of this is the smoothness and plumpness of the skin due to increased collagen production when we are young. Another indicator is how fast we heal after a cut or a bruise by readily recruiting local stem cells and factors to repair damaged tissue. As we age, stem cell production drops and we can’t keep up with the repair, especially after a major injury or while fighting disease.
The goal of regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy is to shift your body to a state of repair and Balance. The Balance Therapy uses your own mesenchymal stem cells to release cytokines and growth factors to lower excess inflammation, enhance repair, and provide nutrients to fix damaged tissues. With a Balance Therapy, we hope to significantly reduce pain and discomfort, and erase the damage in the knees, hips, shoulders and elbows by restoring cartilage growth. The Balance Therapy may change the laxity and the tone of the skin to a more youthful state. It may enhance and boost your brain and cognition. And, it may get all the senses and organs working again at full capacity.
Our Stem Cell Isolation Technique
We use the latest technology, that Dr Tehrani helped develop, to extract the highest number of regenerative cells and growth factors from the smallest amount of adipose tissue harvest. Harvest may sound a bit scary but it is actually very comfortable and it's considered a minor procedure. Removing stem cells through this method results in a much higher cell counts, which in turn can provide the best possible outcomes. The cells we extract are your cells which are prepared and given back to you in under two hours. All protocols used in this process are within strict guidelines set forth by the Global Alliance of Regenerative Medicine USA (GARM-USA). GARM-USA is internationally recognized in the field of regenerative medicine, using both stem/stromal cell-based and bio-cellular therapies for a number of health conditions.
In addition, and when indicated, we do purchase and use umbilical tissue, cord blood or other allogenic (from a donor) stem cells from trusted FDA compliant tissue banks commercially available.

What to Expect from a Stem Cell treatment?
There are numerous benefits to stem cell therapy, and no significant side effects.
- It is a safe and quick procedure done in under two hours, often much less.
- Involves a minor fat harvest, with minimal discomfort and no scarring.
- No downtime. A true lunch-hour procedure!
- Well-tolerated with very few side effects and can be repeated multiple times.
- All-natural, “By the Patient for The Patient” without additional medications or treatments.
During an initial consultation, Dr. Tehrani will explain the procedure and determine a treatment plan specific for you to get the most benefit in the shortest amount of time. In general, it is recommended that patients receive at least one additional treatment in six (6) months, and once every year to maintain the effectiveness of treatments.
Recovery from a Stem Cell treatment?
The entire procedure is often performed in less than two hours with little to no downtime – the real lunch-time makeover. Many patients are able to return to work the same day. Since the stem cells and the growth factors are your own, there is no risk of a negative reaction to the procedure.
You will most likely have an easy recovery period from this revolutionary stem cell treatment. You may have some discomfort for a day or two from the lipo-aspirate donor site which will not in any way interfere with your routine daily activity. You may experience mild soreness and redness at the harvest or the injection site (if any). You should avoid strenuous activity for a few days following a stem cell treatment. You can exercise, and resume heavy activities in 1-2 weeks or as tolerated.
